Who am I?

Well here you are.  Or at least, here I am.

I started running at school aged 13. I’m not really at all sure why. It took me a year or so to get into the school cross country team (yep – I’m not naturally gifted!). After another year I was representing my County at cross country. I stopped running just before my A Levels. Again, not really sure why. I think it had to do with girls, beer, cigarettes and maybe a bit of study. And the dog ate my homework.

Fast forward 20 years. I am now 37 years old and recently left the Army after 11 years of service. I had rapidly put weight on. In fact, in May 2008 I weighed 15 stone (210 pounds/95.5kg)…. so I decided to run again. Actually I decided to get myself into shape to run 100 miles.

Now I have lost 4 stone and my goal is to run 140 miles in 24 hours.

That, in a nutshell, is my rather chequered running history.

I am currently training for the Sri Chinmoy 24hr ultra marathon in October 2009.  My goal is to run 140 miles in 24hrs.  I will be raising money for the Down’s Syndrome Association in the process.

Hi Tom, I was casually browsing the web looking for some endurance event ideas when I remembered seeing you in the local paper featuring your prep for a looong run sometime soon. So I thought I would see if there was any info on the web and I found your blog (nice read). If you remember, we both served at the DLO and left the Army at the same time. Incidentally, a mate of mine Nick Yardley told me that you are working at Land these days with SCS. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to get in touch again. I have just completed a double ironman race in the last four weeks and am looking out beyond my ironman season next year to a biggy event for 2010/11. How are things going in prep for your October challenge? It seems the achilles is proving to be problem for you, but one I’m sure you will overcome. Anyway, if you ever fancy shooting the endurance breeze then get in touch. Good luck with your event, Pete

P.S. I seem to remember possibly upsetting your wife on a patch e-mail a few years back and not apologising – sorry!! 0:)

      Hi Pete!!

Crikey. Somebody I actually know has found the blog!

Yes – I know Nick and see him out training ocassionally. Double Ironman? Madness. (Says he!). A mate at work is trying to get me to do a Deca Man (I guess that’s a 24mi swim, 1120 mi bike and 262 mi run?)

Things going ok for Oct. Achilles is still a pain, but I’m still fairly confident I can make 140 +. Will need to get 235km, 147 mi, to be in with a shot of the GB team for the World Champs next year – not sure if I can make that, but I’m going to give it a shot. Where are you living now? We are still in Andover.
